In the early hours of March 18, 2024, Pakistan’s Air Force executed a series of airstrikes within Afghanistan, targeting hideouts of the Tehrik-i-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) in Paktika, Khost, and Kunar provinces. The swift and decisive action resulted in the elimination of TTP-affiliated commander Abdullah Shah, marking a significant blow to the terrorist network.

These airstrikes were a direct response to a high-profile attack by Jaish ul Fursan in North Waziristan, which tragically claimed the lives of seven Pakistani soldiers and officers. Additionally, the Pakistan Army conducted an overnight operation in the MadiKhel area of North Waziristan, neutralizing seven TTP terrorists responsible for facilitating the aforementioned attack.

These coordinated strikes underscore a clear policy shift by both the military establishment and the new Pakistani government, signaling a zero-tolerance approach towards the TTP. It is evident that negotiations are off the table for the time being, as the nation stands united in its resolve to combat terrorism head-on.

Crucially, the response from Pakistan’s government has been resolute and unwavering, with ministers and officials staunchly defending the sacrifices made by the armed forces. President Asif Zardari’s presence at the funeral of the martyred officer symbolizes the nation’s solidarity and determination to confront terrorism.

This is not the first time Pakistan has taken such bold action. A similar strike occurred in April 2022, albeit on a smaller scale. However, this recent operation demonstrates a heightened commitment to root out terrorism, as evidenced by the coordinated nature of the strikes across multiple provinces in Afghanistan.

As of now, there has been no official response from the Afghan interim government, raising questions about the state of bilateral relations and the efficacy of cross-border cooperation in combating terrorism.

In the face of escalating threats posed by terrorist groups like the TTP, Pakistan’s proactive stance sends a clear message: terrorism will not be tolerated, and those responsible will be met with swift and decisive action. It is imperative for both regional and international stakeholders to support Pakistan in its efforts to maintain peace and stability in the region.
