Nature has gifted human beings with rational minds and an unlimited ability to think, but at the same time, it has also tested them by making the selfish desire for power an inherent part of their being. Sigmund Freud summed this up by giving the id, ego, and superego principles, whereby the id represents impulsiveness in human beings, the superego depicts moral elements, and the ego acts as a mediator between the id and superego and works on the reality principle. Hence, a rational human being, according to Freud, is one whose ego is well-developed and who can easily navigate between his impulsive desires and moral principles.
Based on Freud’s structure of the human psyche, one can easily analyze the recent actions of the BLA, a sub-ethno nationalist militant group, that took the innocent civilians of Mach as hostages, restricted their routine activities, laid land mines in residential areas, and embarked on the journey of bloodbath by engaging in armed terrorist attacks. These so-called freedom fighters acted as megalomaniacs who operated on the id principle and opened fire without any discrimination, thus resulting in the martyrdom of five innocent civilians, including a minor named Abu Zar.
Their impulsive behavior does not stop here, as they repeatedly issued propaganda-laden press releases that included sweeping statements, exaggerated figures of casualties, and multiple other fake claims. For instance, they stated that they managed to martyr approximately 78 members of the LEAs, but in reality, only 4 casualties were confirmed by the LEAs. Apart from this, it is also important to critically analyze the language used in BLA’s press releases, which adds weight to the argument that their rationality works only on the id principle. For instance, they stated that they “punished” the SHO who tried to “take advantage of BLA’s concession.” Similarly, they also stated that they released several police and levies personnel after issuing them “warnings.”
Such statements clearly indicate the power-hungry aspirations of the BLA. Hence, it would not be wrong to say that the recent actions of the BLA were a mere reflection of their under-developed rationality and their hyper-developed aspirations for power and authority.
