The province now boasts a comprehensive network of healthcare facilities, including 13 major hospitals, 18 teaching hospitals, 33 District Headquarter Hospitals (DHQs), and 756 Basic Health Units (BHUs). The total number of hospitals has reached 820, and there are 541 dispensaries. This expansion represents a monumental leap in healthcare accessibility and indicates a deliberate effort to address the medical needs of the population.
Despite this growth, myths persist that Balochistan lacks specialized healthcare services. Some believe that the province’s facilities are insufficient for handling specific health conditions. This belief is not entirely accurate. Balochistan is home to 8 tuberculosis (TB) centers, 24 dialysis centers, and 4 cardiac treatment centers. These specialized facilities play a crucial role in providing targeted care for serious health issues, from managing chronic renal conditions to addressing heart diseases. The presence of these centers demonstrates the province’s commitment to offering advanced and focused medical treatments.
Another common misconception is that military medical facilities in Balochistan are reserved solely for military personnel and not accessible to the local population. The Combined Military Hospitals (CMHs) and Frontier Corps (FC) hospitals scattered across the province are frequently utilized by civilians, particularly in areas where civilian healthcare facilities are sparse. There are 8 CMHs and 2 FC hospitals in Balochistan, which provide essential medical services to both military personnel and local residents. Recent developments have shown a clear commitment to integrating modern medical practices into the provincial healthcare system. For instance, the Interventional Cardiology Unit (ICQ), inaugurated in November 2022, represents a significant advancement in cardiology services. The ICQ has been accredited by the College of Physicians and Surgeons Pakistan for training and academic purposes, highlighting the province’s dedication to maintaining high standards in specialized medical care and education. Efforts have been made to reach out to the most isolated communities in the province. Since January 2024, more than 61,662 patients in remote areas have received free medical checkups and treatments. This is complemented by the provision of free medical camps and telemedicine services, which serve over 20,000 patients per month.
